Lake Eyre in flood has been the inspiration of many artists like John Olsen, Sydney Nolan & Tim Storrier. Following in this tradition, photographer Peter Elfes in The Arrival, The Lake Eyre Series has captured Lake Eyre like we have never seen. As Lake Eyre continues to fillfor the third year in a row, a rare natural phenomenon isoccurring, ‘the greening of the outback’. This major exhibition by photographer Peter Elfes features low level aerial images that capture the dramatic and spectacular metamorphosis of the desert as waters, that have travelled more than 1,000 km through the Channel Country from Australia’s top end, reaching the salt pan of Lake Eyre.

“I was drawn to the desert when I heard about the water heading for the Lake Eyre basin. I wanted to document the transformation that occurs to this stark and arid land, from a barren landscape of an ancient world, into the vibrantly coloured oasis it becomes with the arrival of floodwaters. The Arrival is a photo essay of my journeys through Lake Eyre and central desert. It attempts to show the significance of a major climatic event that defines and shapes the abstract beauty of Australia’s landscape.”
